Cavities (Tooth Decay):
The combination of the bacteria in the mouth, saliva, and the sugars of food particles create a sticky film called plaque. Plaque produces acid that disolves the enamel on the teeth causing pits and erosions that are called cavities.
If ignored, the small pits will turn into large cavities that will progress into the soft layer below the enamel called dentin. At this stage, the tooth may be sensitive to sweets, cold, or hot temperatures. If caught in time a filling could correct the
problem.
If the cavity gets too large and there isn't enough solid tooth surface left to hold a filling, then the tooth may require a crown. If the decay is neglected, it will spread into the pulp (nerve) and cause an abscess. Then the tooth will either need a root canal or an extraction.
