Gum Disease (Periodontal Disease):
The first stage of gum disease is gingivitis. Plaque buildup along the base of the tooth causes mild inflammation of the gums and they become red and bleed when probed.
If gingivitis is left untreated, it can lead to periodontitis, the second stage of gum disease. The gum separates from the tooth and the bone level deteriorates.
The third level of gum disease is advanced periodontitis. The gums recede even further and away from the tooth causing the bone to continue to deteriorate which can lead to tooth loss.
