Snoring:
When a person sleeps, the muscles in the mouth and throat relax and the soft tissue falls back in the throat causing the airway to be partially obstructed.
Snoring occurs when the soft palate and uvula vibrate as the person is trying to breathe from a smaller airway.
Not only does snoring disrupt the sleep cycles of
other family members, but in the case of sleep apnea, snoring can be a sign of a
dangerous health problem. Sleep apnea actually cuts off the flow of oxygen to
the brain, and in severe cases can cause serious damage. The only way to
diagnose the cause of your snoring is to have a sleep study performed by a
qualified sleep physician.
A treatment many use is a respiration machine to open the airway. Many patients find them uncomfortable and eventually stop using them. An easier and more comfortable way is to wear mouthpiece during sleep. We can make a custom oral appliance that
keeps the airway open by holding the lower jaw forward and open, preventing the
tongue and throat tissues from collapsing the critical airway. There are various
designs of anti-snoring devices. We can work with your physician to determine
the proper oral appliance for your needs.
