Sealants:
A sealant is a thin plastic coating that is
applied on the biting surfaces of your back teeth (molars). It cuts down
formation of tooth decay by creating a barrier on the deep grooves and pits of
your teeth and sealing out the decay-causing bacteria that lives in plaque. It
makes the grooves of the teeth smoother so they are easier to clean with your
toothbrush.
First the teeth are cleaned. Then an etching solution is applied to the teeth to help the sealant stick. After the sealant is
brushed on the teeth an ultraviolet light is used to harden the material.
The best time to apply sealants is when children get their permanent first
molars (around 6 years of age) and when they get their permanent second molars
(around 12 years of age).
